An exciting new cafe and bar at Queenstown Airport allows local residents and travellers alike a view of the mountains while they relax with a drink, a snack, or a full meal.
Designed to be enjoyed in any season, Provenance boasts a warm interior inspired by this region's famous autumn colours and an enclosed courtyard opening on to the terminal forecourt. This large indoor-outdoor space has excellent infrared heating to keep customers cosy in the winter, and a retractable canopy roof and sides that can be rolled up in the summer, ensuring year-round comfort.
"It's unusual to have al fresco dining at an airport, but we have a spectacular setting, so we wanted to showcase that," Chief Executive Glen Sowry says. "It's been very well received. Travellers tell us they love being able to spend some time outdoors before getting on a flight."
The airport also wanted to create an inviting space for those who aren't travelling.
"Last year, we expanded the domestic departures lounge to incorporate the Airspresso cafe and bar. This was necessary to safely accommodate the number of passengers now flying out of Queenstown, and it has greatly improved their experience. However, we know the residents of our community miss being able to sit and enjoy the buzz of the airport. This gives them a new place to do that, and there will be more to come with the development arising from our Master Plan."
Provenance co-owner Craig Macfarlane says they wanted to create something really authentic that championed the wonderful produce of the region.
"All the ingredients our chefs use are carefully sourced, with an emphasis on flavour, freshness, and quality. The fact we can really resonate what's special about Queenstown here at the airport is excellent."
Open from 6am to 8pm, Provenance offers an all-day menu cooked to order, ranging from hearty breakfast dishes to fish and chips, gourmet burgers, pasta, open sandwiches, and snacks to share (or not). For those who want to grab something more quickly, there is a tempting range of savoury and sweet cabinet food and salads made fresh each each day.
"There's something for everybody, and a price point for everybody."
Fully licensed, Provenance also serves local juices, soft drinks, beers and wines (as well as espresso martinis on tap), making it the ideal spot for a farewell toast or a celebratory drink upon arrival.
