Once again QAC’s Rescue Fire team are taking part in the annual Auckland Sky Tower Stair Challenge raising funds for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC). This year QAC is fielding a five-strong team to compete and raise much-needed funds for the charity.
The Sky Tower Stair Challenge is the annual rite of passage for firefighters from across NZ and the world who compete for the fastest climber title, while also raising funds for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC). This year, QAC has five members of the Rescue Fire (RF) team heading to Auckland’s Sky Tower on May 18th to give it a go as part of the event’s 15th year celebrations – Gavin Mason, Simon Bowden, Claire Jones, Kylie Litchfield and Richard Stokes.
Previous competitor, and 2018 third place recipient, Gavin Mason is keen to make it to the top tier again. “We’re looking forward to a good, close tussle with Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Nelson and Dunedin airports,” said Gavin.
Adding a bit of fun to their fundraising efforts this year, the team are also hosting a ‘Guess the Flip’ competition. Members of the Queenstown Airport community can guess how long it will take for each of the five-person team to flip a 92kg tyre the length of the 890-metre crosswind runway, as well as how many ‘flips’ it will take, with all monies going towards the cause. All funds raised will go towards the cause.
